How We Use AI
Artificial intelligence and digital tools are increasingly shaping how political information is produced and consumed. They offer real potential — and real risks.
Why it matters:
Trust and credibility are central to the New Ireland Institute and The Needle. Readers deserve to know how tools are used, and where human judgment remains essential.
Our principles
-
AI supports our work — it does not replace it.
Analysis, judgment, and editorial decisions are made by humans. We remain fully accountable for everything we publish. -
We use AI to assist research, not to generate arguments or opinions.
Tools may be used to help review large documents, organise information, identify patterns, or summarise material — but not to write articles or determine conclusions. -
Editorial responsibility remains with the Institute.
All published content is reviewed, edited, and approved by human editors. -
Transparency matters.
If AI plays a meaningful role in the preparation of text, data analysis, or visual material, this will be clearly disclosed. -
We do not use AI to simulate people or events.
We do not publish AI-generated representations of real individuals, speeches, or historical events in ways that could mislead readers. -
Ethical use comes first.
Our approach reflects Irish and European norms around accountability, data protection, and public trust in civic life.
The bottom line:
AI can improve efficiency and clarity — but credibility is earned through evidence, restraint, and human judgment. That standard applies to everything we publish.
